Block Mania

A 2000AD Judge Dredd boardgame

Block Mania box cover Mega Mania box cover

Block Mania is a fast-paced game of manic destruction, set in the world of Mega-City One, home of 2000 AD’s Judge Dredd. Each player controls the citizens of an entire Mega-City block, as they attempt to destroy the block(s) next door – or at least do it a lot of damage before the Judges arrive and stop all the fun! During the game, all kinds of things will happen; armed mobs wreak havoc in the plazas and block parks; obese fatties trundle forward, flattening everything in their path; highly trained, well-armed City-Def units infiltrate the neighbouring block and try to blow it to smithereens; Vigilantes commandeer Sky-Rail cars and mount hit & run raids; and much, much more…

Games Workshop certainly had some fun with their 2000 AD license  and this game is another great result.

Block Mania Board
Counters and Cards

Each player gets a block and attempts to knock their opponent’s block to pieces. It was designed for two players and that is the only way I have played it, although the expansion allowed for up to two more players to take part. It is well balanced and interesting, and Richard addressed the problem of the tediousness that can occur with games involving unit counters by forcing you to prioritise. I think it was a winner and it is a great feeling to watch your opponent’s block suffering an out of control fire until it eventually collapses. It’s quite a different feeling when it happens to you, though.
